About the Author

Dr. Mayra Alfonso was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Since her early childhood she has been accompanied by dogs. Her first dog, Cuchita, was given to her by her family when she was five years old. That was the begining of her adoration for dogs. Over the years, Dr. Alfonso has had multiple companion dogs, all of which she has considered special and which she has loved immensely.

Dr. Alfonso is a medical doctor, and currently practices medicine in the state of South Carolina. She lived in Puerto Rico until she finished her Doctorate in Medicine. She then moved to the continental US, where she completed residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Albany, NY, followed by a fellowship in Electrodiagnostic Medicine in Milwaukee, WI. When Dr. Alfonso moved to Albany, NY, for her residency training she brough with her Lady, her beloved cocker spaniel.

Dr. Alfonso's love for dogs has been very intense and rewarding, and has been the motivator that has propelled her to learn as much as possible about her flurry friends..

Prior to deciding becoming a medical doctor, she has wanted to become a veterinarian, but the lack of veterinary schools in Puerto Rico and her modest upbringing was a limiting factor in accomplishing her dream. Even when she could not become a veterinarian she always followed very closely the care of her dogs. Currently she has 3 loving dog companions, which are her pride and joy: Abbey, Benjie and Cody.
